Chapter 3: A Spark in the Night
That night, sleep refused to come. Toby lay awake, staring at the rocket. His phone was dead, and the house was silent except for the hum of the fridge and the tick of the hallway clock.
Restless, he pushed aside the blanket and climbed out the window onto the small patch of roof above the porch. He’d come here before when things got too loud in his head.
He lay back on the shingles, hands behind his head. The night sky stretched wide above him — endless, scattered with stars like sugar spilled on black velvet. He found Orion’s Belt, traced the Big Dipper, and imagined riding a comet’s tail into the unknown.
What if I really tried? he thought. What if I actually did something?
For the first time in a long while, the idea didn’t make him tired. It made him curious.
Toby stayed there until the cold sent him back inside — but the spark stayed with him. Small, warm, impossible to ignore.
